Treat Your Car Right

When it comes to our cars, trucks, and other automobiles, we often associate our wheels with freedom, and for good reason. Getting your driver’s license and your first car can be like a baby bird learning to fly and leaving the nest. Your whole world opens up to you in an instant. However, owning a car is a lot of responsibility, and it quickly becomes apparent that buying a car isn’t the last you’ll be paying a lot of money for it. Repairing your automobile will be costly and necessary, so it’s best to take certain steps to make these costs less frequent and less expensive. Here are some tips to help you save money on repairing on your ride.

First and foremost, learn to make repairs yourself. As mentioned above, the process of having your car repaired is expensive, so making repairs yourself can be a great way to save a ton of money on keeping your car running. Insteading of hiring mechanics to do the dirty work for you, roll up your sleeves and and do it yourself. Don’t be afraid to buy the parts you need from Autozone, for starters, and replace the parts that are causing you trouble. To save even more, learn the skills needed to diagnose your car’s problems, as well. Furthermore, you’ll want to be prepared for your car to break down in transit, so keep a tool kit and a spare tire in your car at all times, just in case. Lastly, keep a cell phone on hand, just in case the unthinkable happens and you need a tow, because you can’t be prepared for everything.

Next up, you’ll want to take steps to simply prolong the inevitability of repairs in the first place. This means driving less. Simply put, don’t drive if you don’t have to. A good rule of thumb is to walk instead of driving if you’re driving less than a mile. Walking a mile or less to and from your destination is a small price to pay for preserving your car for more important tasks, or those you simply can’t do on foot, such as grocery shopping. Even grocery shopping could be done on foot or with a bike under certain circumstances, however, so take all of these factors into consideration.
